Catnip, or Nepeta cataria, isn’t just a fun plant for your pet cat. In fact, catnip provides a calming and soothing effect on humans. Catnip is a member of the mint family and is a popular herb used both alone as a tea or tincture or added to relaxing herbal blends. The perennial has a square stem, grayish-green leaves and fragrant pink flowers. Catnip is native to the Mediterranean, Asia and Africa. It was introduced to North America by European settlers and can now be found in many gardens across the United States.

Catnip leaves have been utilized for centuries for its ability to promote restful sleep and may help to aid digestion and ease stomach cramping. Due to its connection to the mint family, the flavor of the brew is earthy and slightly minty with hints of citrus.
